Who Are We?

Who are we?  Who are the people writing for this DeafCan blog?

We are all Deaf Canadians.  We all work at other jobs. We have families that we love to be with at home.  It is hard for us to find the time to post on this blog because we are so busy.  We will try to post one or two times every week. 

Some of us work for businesses that don’t agree with our opinions. So we use different names, not our real names. We don’t want to lose our jobs because of something we say in DeafCan!

Why is it called “DeafCan”?  There are two reasons.

Reason 1: “DeafCan” really means “Deaf Canada” or “Deaf Canadians”.  That is who we are!

Reason 2: “DeafCan” is a short way of saying, “DEAF people CAN do anything hearing people can do, except hear!”  That means we can live and work and play just the same way that hearing people can.  A lot of hearing people don’t realize what Deaf people can do.

Welcome to the New DeafCan Blog!

DeafCan started as a place to post news and information about the Deaf community.  It did not have a clear purpose.  Without a clear purpose, it could not be successful.

We have decided to change it.  Now, DeafCan wants to provide “Entertaining and easy-reading news, information, opinion, and humour from a unique Deaf Canadian perspective.”

What does this mean?  Well, we are going to watch some interesting news that is happening in Canada and other countries.  Sometimes this news will be about Deaf people.  Sometimes it will be about other things, such as political issues in Canada and the world. 

In each posting, we will try to summarize the information in very simple terms.  We will try to explain it clearly.  We hope this will help everyone who has difficulty reading and understanding information.

Did you know there are six million people in Canada who find it hard to understand news reports because the language is difficult for them?  There are also about 300,000 Canadians who use Sign language, and many of them struggle to understand written English.  Also, there are lots of people who come to Canada from other countries that don’t speak English, and they are trying to improve their own English skills.

This blog is for those people!  So, our postings here will try to explain in easy language some of the things that are happening in Canada, and a few things that are happening in other countries, too.

But we are people with strong opinions of our own, and we like to laugh a lot, too.  So after we explain the news, we will tell you what we think about it.  Sometimes we will be funny.  Sometimes we will be serious.  If you find it hard to read English, maybe these parts of our postings will be tough to understand.  That’s okay!  We want these parts to be more of a challenge for you.  We want you to read these parts and think about things in the world.  Our opinions won’t always be written in simple language, like this posting is.  But please try!  We are here to help you!
